FMCSA Allocates Safety Funding to All Fifty States in Nationwide Effort to Reduce Traffic Deaths

Saturday, June 15, 2024

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) ongoing mission to eliminate traffic fatalities, has announced the allocation of safety funding to all fifty states and U.S. territories. This move is part of the Biden-Harris Administration's broader initiative to achieve zero traffic deaths on American roads.

The funding, distributed under the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP), is set to enhance state-level initiatives targeting the reduction of large truck and bus-related crashes. Each state, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, has received a share of this crucial financial support, with the total amount reaching $480 million. This substantial investment underscores the federal government’s commitment to improving road safety through targeted interventions and support for state safety programs.

The FMCSA has emphasized that this funding will be instrumental in advancing efforts such as roadside inspections, traffic enforcement, safety audits, and compliance reviews. By bolstering these activities, states can better enforce regulations and safety measures, ultimately reducing the number of accidents involving commercial vehicles.

This nationwide funding allocation follows the DOT’s comprehensive National Roadway Safety Strategy, which prioritizes the safety of all road users, including commercial drivers. The strategy combines safer people, safer roads, safer vehicles, and post-crash care to make American roads the safest in the world.
