Attention! FMCSA Issues Warning on Phishing Attempts Involving Fake Registration Emails

Wednesday, July 10, 2024

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has recently issued an alert regarding an increase in phishing scams targeting motor carriers. These scams involve fraudulent emails that claim to be from the FMCSA, instructing recipients to update or renew their registration via a fake website.

According to the FMCSA, these phishing emails often appear convincing, with official logos and language that mimics legitimate communication from the agency. The emails typically direct carriers to a fraudulent website where sensitive information, including registration details and payment information, is requested.

The FMCSA has emphasized that it does not request sensitive information through email and advises all carriers to remain vigilant. The agency encourages recipients of suspicious emails to verify the legitimacy of the communication by contacting the FMCSA directly through its official channels.

In response to this issue, the FMCSA has provided several guidelines to help carriers protect themselves:

  • Always verify the sender's email address.
  • Be cautious of unsolicited emails requesting sensitive information.
  • Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown or unverified sources.
  • Report any suspicious emails to the FMCSA's fraud hotline.
